Long before the show floor lights come on and the crowds begin to gather, the real work of the International Builders’ Show is already underway.

This year, that work included installing Paul Criner as Chair of Education for the NAHB International Builders’ Show (IBS), one of the most respected leadership roles at residential construction’s premier annual event. IBS draws more than 70,000 industry professionals, 1,700 exhibitors, and hosts approximately 120 education sessions each year. It’s where builders, remodelers, and industry leaders gather to sharpen their businesses and see what’s next.

As Chair of Education, Paul helps shape that experience from the inside out.

Behind the Scenes of IBS Education
Serving on the IBS Education Committee is a serious commitment. Each year, the committee travels to Washington, D.C., for an intensive two-day review session, often 12 hours a day, to evaluate and narrow down hundreds of submitted proposals.

With only about 120 education sessions making the final schedule, the selection process is competitive and detailed. The committee carefully reviews each submission, debates topics, vets speakers, and ensures the content reflects what professionals truly need right now. The result is a curated education program designed to move the industry forward in practical, meaningful ways.

In addition to leading the Education Committee, Paul was featured on two panels at this year’s show. His “Shop Talk” sessions focused on hiring smart, handling employee transitions professionally, and improving lead generation and closing strategies. These were candid, peer-driven conversations—the kind that leave attendees with practical tools they can put to work immediately.

Leadership That Reflects Service
For Paul, this role is part of a much larger commitment to the building and remodeling industry. From starting as a helper shortly after high school to serving in national leadership roles within NAHB, his career has always been grounded in growth and service.

His credentials, Certified Graduate Remodeler, Certified Green Professional, and Certified Aging in Place Specialist, along with being named NAHB Young Professional of the Year, speak to the time and effort he’s invested in his craft. But serving at this level isn’t about adding another line to a résumé. For Paul, it’s about giving back to an industry that’s shaped his career, supporting other professionals as they grow, and helping raise the standard for what homeowners should expect from a remodeling experience.

Collaboration and Camaraderie
One of the most valuable aspects of IBS is the camaraderie. Builders and remodelers from across the country come together to share what’s working, where they’ve struggled, and how they’re adapting.

That perspective benefits our team and our clients here at home. The insights gained and the relationships formed all feed back into the way our projects are designed, managed, and delivered. When leadership is rooted in service and collaboration, the impact extends far beyond a conference.

If you’re planning a remodel and want to work with a team that stays actively engaged at the highest levels of our profession, we’d love to start the conversation.
