When most people think about remodeling, the first thing that comes to mind is usually the most exciting part—the final results. Maybe it’s beautiful new countertops, a fresh open layout, or finally getting that spa-like bathroom you’ve always wanted. But the truth is, there’s more to remodeling than just picking tile and paint. Before construction even begins, there’s a lot of planning and coordination happening behind the scenes to ensure everything goes smoothly.

So, what really goes on during a remodel?

It Starts with a Plan
Every great remodel begins with big-picture thinking. What are your goals? What’s not working in your current space? How do you want your home to function and feel? At Criner Remodeling, our process starts with a phone conversation and in-home consultation to answer those questions and see if we’re the right fit for your project.

Once we understand your needs, we move into detailed measurements and photos of your space. This isn’t just for reference—it’s the foundation for creating a 3D model of your home, which helps us (and you) visualize how everything will come together. It’s also where we begin identifying structural considerations, building code requirements, and potential challenges we’ll need to solve.

Permits, Paperwork, and More Planning
One of the biggest behind-the-scenes components of remodeling is permitting. Depending on the scope of your project, we may need permits for things like structural changes, plumbing, or electrical work. Our experienced team manages all of this for you, working with local building departments in Newport News, Yorktown, Williamsburg, and surrounding areas to ensure everything meets code and stays on schedule.

At the same time, we’re working on the design details, helping you choose materials, and starting to order key items, especially the ones that take longer to arrive, like custom cabinets. We’re also coordinating with the subcontractors who will perform the work and finalizing the schedule to ensure your remodel stays on track.

Let Construction Begin!
Once construction starts, one of Criner Remodeling’s project managers is on-site to ensure everything is done right. They coordinate the different trades, manage the day-to-day activities and questions, and ensure steady progress from start to finish. Our goal is to make the experience as easy and stress-free for you as possible.

From permits and design to logistics and inspections, a successful remodel involves far more than what meets the eye. With over 45 years of experience remodeling homes across the Peninsula, Criner Remodeling has refined a process that makes it as stress-free and seamless as possible for homeowners.
